You get ones that are rechargeable at an electrical power point, while others work off the car’s cigarette lighter plug. These tend to have a weaker motor though.

They should never be treated as a replacement for a conventional vacuum cleaner ‘ you will simply burn out the motor. Rather see it as a replacement for a broom and a dustpan; to quickly get rid of those irritating small spills. As mentioned, there are a few models of these portable vacuum cleaners with very powerful motors that might be suitable to clean the carpets in a small apartment, but this is not really what they were intended for.
